Sorry for the delay in replying but haven't been feeling well. It had been sitting in his closet for quite some time. When it started giving him problems, he bought a new one.

So I'm now the owner of a sick PC. I then remembered that HP sold their PC's with a hidden partition that contained the system recovery rather than supply a recovery disk. You could make one copy of this but it ticked off a lot of people because that hidden partition used up about GB's of HD space. All SP's were lost as linney mentioned. I cleaned out the junk apps.

When I rebooted the PC, a 2nd glitch appeared. It takes minutes to boot up Safe Mode too. Shutting down all unnecessary apps from starting boot was no help. The few apps in Programs Start menu take an unusual amount of time to bring up also. The last glitch to appear was it won't allow me to install the SP's or any patches from neither the CD's I have nor Windows Update site. Thanks for the help, Bob. Could be a bad or failing drive It may or may not work installing with that key The drive manufacturer will have free bootable diagnostic software that can thoroughly check out the condition of the hard drive.

Running some RAM memory checkers might be worthwhile too. Ben, linney I would love to try all your suggestions but things have gotten worse. That was after last good boot. PC will no longer boot. I'm going to try rerunning sys recovery again. If it works, I'll create a sys recovery set of CD's before doing anything else.

The windows CD I have is over 2 years old and has no service packs, will this work with this or do I need it to have SP1. I also have the SP2 disk I got from Microsoft. I managed removing the malware from my computer but i still have those tabs missing. Do u think u could help me restore them back? I had the same problem before, I went through system restore and it all worked fine. If you know when you had this problem you could possibly restore your machine's state to the day before.
